I HATE,HATE,HATE tape backups. I'd much rather copy data across the internet
to a remote site, or even copy to a local external hard drive and let the
client or a designee take it home every night. We had a jukebox tape backup
system at the SCSO that supposedly performed a backup each night and sent me
an email indicating the job was successful or failed. Hmmm, one day, in a
galaxy far, far away, long, long ago (about 15 years) I show up for work and
one of my techs says our primary Novell file server was down. I said, okay,
replace the drives and reinstall from tape. He reinstalled the OS, then
loaded the tape drive and guess what, the tapes couldn't be read! We wound
up sending the disk off to OnTrack and $10k later, we had our data back!
Tape drives, smape drives.....

Nowadays my clients are not that big and I advise them to purchase a couple
of 200 gig usb external drives. They copy their data to the disks and take
them with them at the end of the day. All is good. I also offer an internet
backup for selected data and that gives them a belt and suspenders approach
for not a lot of money.

Y'all can have the tapes. Did I mention I HATE tape drives?

John

We lost a proposal for doing a second office for a
company after working for the first office for several
years. they wanted to go with a "big" company.

2 weeks after manually entering all their inventory
into the system their hard disk crashed. No backups.

good thing they went with a big company.
