I worked for a company (in a heavily regulated industry) that had a 'disaster recovery' plan professionaly drawn up when they had a Wang mini-computer in the mid 80's. After we went to a PC network (early 90's) I went to work updating the plan. I wanted to purchase a second backup drive and keep it offsite, strangely enough they couldn't understand why. Seemed pretty simple to me...
They went to great lenghts to make sure the backup tapes were protected, and thought that was enough; they couldn't understand that if they couldn't get their hands on a tape drive to actually READ the tapes they were useless. So I picked up the phone and called our preferred vendor and asked them if they had one in stock, he said no but he could probably get one in 2-3 weeks. So I looked at the company President and told him "if this building burned down last night, we'd be without any our our data for about a month". I worked at a place where this happened(we lost irreplaceable data, however), and afterwards I kinda had to take an IT manager role, and the first item on the agenda, of course, was a "Backup AND RESTORE" strategy... Part of the strategy I drafted ensured regular restore audits of different parts of the backups, carried out by someone other than the person that did the backup(usually with that person present).
