Or write it in a language whose source code you have (or is free to
obtain), which can be compiled in C.

That's how most open source languages work: Perl, Python, Ruby and the
rest. And the C compiler is GPL, to boot.

Or you can continue to lock yourself into what a vendor wants to sell
you. Until they take it away.
