One of the great myths of American entrepreneurship is that people start companies because of the combination of a great idea and burning desire. I have hte exact statistic in a book 7 feet away, but I will just say that a vast majority of businesses are started by people who are fired, laid off, or (as in my case) put themselves in a position where they have little other choice. I now picked up the book, but can't find the number -- my recollection is that it approaches 80%.
