Hi All,

I know a subject similar to this was discussed here perhaps a year ago. I
don't think it quite addressed my problem, though.

I need a VERY robust network fax server system. The agency has over 60
employees using computers on the network. We several dozen multi-page
faxes, and receive another several dozen multi-page faxes, daily, many of
them in the 20-30 page range.

The system must support not only electronic faxing from all workstations,
but the use of scanning workstations (with TWAIN scanners) to send paper faxes.

Automatic routing of received faxes without human intervention is required,
due to HIPAA's, and our own agency's, confidentiality requirements.

Outsourcing fax service is not an option. We send and receive a lot of
HIPAA-protected information. Whether or not online fax services are
"secure", the notion that they are is not accepted by management--nor, do I
believe, would it be accepted by HIPAA regulators, at least, not in the
absence of a signed agreement whereby the provider agrees to comply with
HIPAA regulations. Do online providers even offer such agreements? The
ongoing cost of an outsourced fax provider would also be frowned upon.

The current system, Zetafax, has very limited routing capabilities and is
hamstrung by a Brooktrout fax board with one DID line in and one analog
line out. The DID line answers twenty different phone numbers, but it
answers them one at a time. People trying to send us faxes very frequently
report that the numbers are constantly busy. The agency is growing rapidly;
by Christmas we'll have another 6 or 7 people sending and receiving faxes.

I realize I could improve performance with a multi-line fax board, but
that's not the only issue.

Zetafax has extremely limited native routing capabilities, and its email
routing feature, while allegedly supporting "any standard SMTP mail
server", in fact only apparently works reliably with Exchange Server or,
perhaps, Lotus Notes. (We tried three standards-compliant SMTP servers;
none of them properly handled Zetafax fax output. They routed the messages
correctly but, despite the fact that they could all properly encode
ordinary .tif files, there was apparently a problem with encoding the
species of .tif file that Zetafax outputs. Also, the Zetafax email gateway
cannot cope at all with SMTP servers that require authentication.) As the
agency grows, I need much more flexible routing capabilities, but I'm not
willing to get involved with proprietary "big iron" email servers.

Zetafax is also Windows-only, its documentation is pathetic, its phone
support is understaffed, and there is no significant online community of
users that can provide frank advice and information.

I'm trying to reduce our dependence on MS so I'd like to go to a
Linux-based system. I'm also willing to try a dedicated hardware fax server
if necessary.

I can find products on Google. I'm looking for knowledgeable
recommendations from people who have experience with the products. We would
seriously consider a paid consulting arrangement with such a person for
installation and training.

Thanks in advance for any advice.
