That is the MADness championed by Robert Strange McNamara.  It was foolish then 
as it is now.  The idea that if we are attacked and the only option we have is 
destroying the other guy and not saving our own people is deriliction of duty 
by our government.  Protecting the citizens is one of the legitimate functions 
of government.  If it does not do that, it does not have the right to claim our 
loyalty.

Perhaps you feel comfortable that madmen like President Tom in Iran would be 
deterred by our arsenal... I do not.  Besides, if there is such an exchange, we 
need to be around to bring sanity to the insane world.  

As for as our military budget exceeding most of the others... it's because 
their failed socialistic systems (especially in the EU) have sucked up the 
resources and they are depending on the good will of the US or the former 
Soviet Union to protect them.  They have become lazy people only concerned with 
consuption, preferably of someone elses resources ... a path we are headed 
toward.  I would rather have us be the one they turn to than have us dependent 
upon other systems than cannot keep up with ours.
