I would take it that the hard disk contents were toast and reformat it.  
I probably wouldn't even trust the hard disk again after a failure as 
they are so cheap.  If there are files on there you need, then you could 
set it as a slave and put on another  machine before getting at them to 
back them up.  You can boot up using your XP disk and try to do the 
install and when it prompts for the volume on C drive it should give you 
an option to repair this volume.
