It already uses them... not the full feature set of VFP, but basic access
(USE, SEEK, SCAN, REPLACE, etc.) is possible. I'll add more over time. The
engine is completely written in managed code and also runs on Windows PDAs
and on Linux with Mono.

Well, my long-term goal is to avoid that. If there's a business case for
rewriting the application and the budget available, that's great. Take the
opportunity and port the app to Python, Java or .NET learning a new skill
set along the way. But it doesn't make sense to throw away existing code for
non-business reasons. Granted, the code might not be beautiful, you would do
things different today, etc. but it's debugged code, does exactly what the
busniess needs and has cost a fortune to build in the first place. Hardly
anyone would tear their own house completely down and rebuild from scratch,
just because there are new materials, new types of heating and cooling, or
because sustainability is the new buzz word. Yet, many do this for software
that costed about as much as a house. <shrug>
