Is Guineu going to use VFP tables? If so - and you want to continue using VFP tables - then it would be great for people that just want to port their code. If not, I have found the biggest learning curve is using databases that are not native to the language. If you have used a three tier approach to VFP and have used MSSQL as your data tier, then great. Many have not. Like me for one.
Since I would have to rewrite my applications anyway, I would rather use a more capable yet familiar language. Python is not totally foreign to me. Within days of working with it I developed an application that pulled XML data from a URL and created a formatted CSV file for import into my VFP application. The FoxPro module it replaced used wwIPstuff and dbfs to do the conversion. The Python code is many times faster than the same VFP module and is in production. Now I am turning my efforts to learning how to work with different databases. I am using PostGreSQL and MySQL. This is where I need the most help since the database is not tightly integrated in the language like VFP. I have worked some with MSSQL, but not enough to be comfortable with it. Christof has undertaken no small project and I wish him the best. But just as VFP has many top notch frameworks to choose from, it is good to know that there is more than one alternative to VFP going forward. Ed and Paul have a product already and developers are putting applications using Dabo into production as we speak. I guess what I am suggesting is that you take a look at Dabo and Python and consider supporting their initiative also.
