If she's afear'd that she'll get stiffed, that's one thing. If they're 
just goofballs about paying their bills, that's another.

If she IS regularly getting shafted by folks who take lessons without 
paying, then perhaps the technique is to not be at home when they show 
up for their (unpaid for) lesson - or have someone else (a friend, 
playing along with the gig, perhaps) already in place.

When the person complains, a simple, "Since you hadn't paid, I thought 
that you weren't interested, so I filled your time with someone else."

Harsh.... but effective. Just depends on how hardcore she wants to be.
