I actually took David's advice re: using dd-wrt on some LinkSys 54g WiFi
Routers. For all but 2 of the routers it worked GREAT! But on two of the
Linksys 54gs I managed to truly brick the units. This is because Linksys
uses either an Intel and Samsung chipset in these units. I have not found a
way to see which chipset is in the unit via serial # or model ID. It seems
to be luck of the draw. dd-wrt works GREAT with the Samsung chipset. But
the Intel chipset units will lock up solid, and thus far I have not been
able to unbrick either unit.

That said, I am thrilled to be able to crank up the output from 28mw to
200mw(I could have gone to 251mw). The coverage in my home is terrific.
Next stop, connecting cAntenna units to 2 of these puppies and firing a WiFi
over a tremendous distance for a client of mine. I get an almost good
connection using the cAntenna solution on standard WiFi bridges, but with
200+mw I expect I will see a great connection.

Perhaps consider loading the DD-WRT or Tomato firmware into your router.
Both are free and chock full of goodness :)

You might want to try using different channels on the card and the router.
The default is auto. Another idea is to boost the signal on the router. Get
a higher db rated antenna to boost the signal. You should be able to do that
for around 15.00.
