Isn't that what the registry is for? Reading and writing keys and values?

As long as they know that is going on, and agree to it, I don't see the 
harm.

Some or most clients would probably see this as convenient. Less hassle 
on both sides equals lower cost. But again, as long as they know about 
it and agree to it...
