My five kids, ages 5 through 19, seem to be able to. All their 
schoolwork, casual computer time, etc has been done on Linux since 2004 
and on open software software since 2001. None of them are 'computer 
geniuses' or hacker-phreaks. Just plain kids who play soccer and sell 
girl scout cookies.

Other than hooking up the permissions to access the file server and 
giving my eldest the instructions to set her network card to DHCP while 
at college, I haven't done anything 'special' for any of them.
