Of course I don't have Vista so I'm not sure what I'd do with that. But 
with XP and 2000, on my own local computer, I install my programs under 
"Progs" or something like that (or maybe "games" if I install games).

For end users, I don't force the application, or it's data files, to be 
anywhere specific. They pick where they want them - I inform them what kind 
of access rights are needed for the different folders. So they can choose. 
Inside my log file (that the send for troubleshooting) I capture where the 
application is trying to read/write, etc so I can let them know where to 
check for access rights problems.

If users are tricked into going with Vista's, I'll probably start 
recommending they use my approach (e.g. make your own folder and go from 
there). But still, I will not force any particular folder locations. I may 
continue to have the install "default" to "program files", but maybe I'll 
start putting up warnings right on the installation screens that Vista 
might screw some things up if you put stuff there.
