If someone is mad enough, and determined enough, they will find a way.
The first thing that immediately come to mind is suicide booming and I'm
not sure a medal detector/scanner would catch that. Remember, there a
more ways than one to skin a cat, and many alternative weapon that could
be used by someone who does not have access to a gun, but is angry with
the system, would be much worse than a gun.
Remember, people commit crimes, not weapons.
Some very valid reason why the a person should have the second amendment
right to bear arms for personal protection are:
1) Terrorism
2) The lawlessness that occurs with disasters like:
a) Hurricane Katrina
b) The bird Flu
c) A terrorist attack
d) Global Warming
e) Possible unavailability of Petrol due to a world wide
shortage or other disruption like an OPEC boycott.
3) Then there are the more routine dangers that could require a person
to defend himself like people targeted to become victim of crime from
every source imaginable, like religious fundamentalism and hate group to
organized and unorganized crime.
4) Attack from wild animals or domesticated animal like pit bulldogs.
