        Ah, now we're getting close. Why does it "ring true" to you? Because  
you experienced it yourself, or because that's what you've been taught  
is what happened?

        I grew up with the understanding that the only reason was to stop the  
war quickly because the US had already started moving troops for a  
massive D-Day-like invasion of Japan. They were predicting extremely  
large numbers of deaths on both sides, and dropping the nukes was  
considered the lesser of the two evils.

        I learned this from my Dad, who was on one of the ships heading for  
Japan when the nukes were dropped. Had they not dropped them, it is  
very likely that I would not be sitting here to type these words. So I  
have a bit of a personal interest in this topic.
