Inferred 'experience' if that is possible; I'm a Viet Nam war vet and I
had several commanders who were WWII vets. I was in the 4424th TBS
(Tactical Bomb Squadron), the first squadron to use 'smart' weapon
technology in 1970 - 1971.

My point is several of my senior officers related many interesting
stories about the Pacific Theater action and all felt the bombing
(nuclear) was necessary.

Later when I moved out of the flying end of the business to the
strategic missile end of the business, Hiroshima/Nagasaki was an endless
debate among combat crew members. Why? Because what we were wielding
then made the Hiroshima/Nagasaki weapons seem like 'firecrackers' and
knowing the 'assured destruction' intent didn't make you feel any
better.

The consent phase to go nuclear under SIOP is more complicated than it
is made out to be in the movies. It is more than just two guys turning
a switch simultaneously in a capsule.
