Gee, I can't wait to see the responses to this one...

However, you make a point aside from the shot at France.  I just talked
the other day to a Navy MSC and learned something I didn't know -- the
Navy has two big hospital ships in the Fleet.  They are used more (by at
least 70% according to the Naval officer I spoke to yesterday) for
humanitarian relief mission than military missions.  

Incredible, huh?

It's a responsibility the rest of the world shied away from, just like
they shy away from helping when there are disasters.  We didn't just
appoint ourselves, we got to this position by default since no one else
steps up, but eveyone (including the corrupt UN) wants us to send relief
when problems come.  The two positions go together... the world wants a
share of our wealth when they have problems, it would be foolish (and we
are) to give it without some sort of control.  If you want the
irresponsibility of living in a third world county that helps no one and
offends no one (no, make that everyone), try moving to France.
