You are making perfect sense, Stephen. The function of the military is to kill
people and break things. It is nearly impossible to have any kind of action of
this type without this result. It seems that Iraq is remarkably intact
considering what might have been... for those that think restraint was not
used. And this restraint was often to the detriment of our troups.
Witness the debate on waterboarding. While it's OK to put a bullet through a
mans head on the battlefield, it is not OK to use non-lethal means of
interrogation. I guess I'm smarter than many in congress when I recognize that
interrogating bad guys is not my area of expertise and I would not tell those
doing the job how to do it. We need to get it through our collective heads
that the comfort of people sworn to kill is is not as important as protecting
the people protecting us. Where is Jack Bauer when we need him?
These debates, while presented as high moral issues, are simply about crippling
the ability of the military to do it's job because there are those who are
ashamed of everything this country is and has historically stood for. This is
sad when these people are part of our government.
