When you think about energy, and especially petroleum, you need to think
globally, not the local USA economy. Even if we drilled more wells off
shore from the US, or in Alaska, it wouldn't change the overall global
economics in play today. The price the oil companies pay for oil is set
globally, and the overall economic function of the supply and demand
equation is global.

It is likely that worldwide supply of petroleum has peeked, regardless
of new production coming online everyday; because, oil wells all over
the world are being plugged as all the petroleum has been recovered from
them. Yet global demand for petroleum is steadily increasing and will
continue to increase into the foreseeable future. At some point
consumption of petroleum will decrease, because of high prices, which
could stifle our economy, so we must find new sources of energy to
continue growth and stability of the USA.
