Ugly headline, too clever by half. Here's the scoop: one of the innovative companies that tried to combine Open Source software creation with a money-making product got bought by one of the big UNIX vendors for ONE BILLION DOLLARS. Wow. A couple geeks in a garage, ala Yahoo or Google. Geeks shake in their boots screaming "The Sky is falling! the Sky is falling!" just like when Adam Green started teaching SQL Anywhere, or Borland bought dBASE or Microsoft bought Fox. Is the sky falling? Time will tell. Sun won't get their money back by pissing off their customer base. But they've been heavy-handed and clumsy before. Like, oh, who else might we name :)? Sun's gone through a change of ownership. OpenSolaris is doing pretty well.
