Yes, that is a factor, I agree. Killing en masse is much easier now. Where we seem to disagree is that I believe that there is a social factor in play. Gangs (in my broad definition) kill their "enemies" real or perceived. They have rivals, and kill them with thin rationalization. These different kids rationalize it, too, of course. But they kill more randomly. In the bio's I have read, they view it all as a game, and the gun is their trump card.
