Maybe they thought they needed to do favors for the customer early in the
project, and now don't feel that way anymore.

Haven't we all done one or two unprofitable tasks because we want to do 1 or
more profitable tasks?

That part is not your fault... I sure hope you can contact your customer so
they can advocate on your behalf. Perhaps when the customer's family
emergency ends.
