I do the same but had no such problems.  Anyway, my firewall software
blocks Windows updates.  I manually enable them before I manually
apply updates.

There is a bonus to automatic updates though.  Today I as looking at
an error log from a client site that is having issues.  I noticed that
they are running XP SP1.  SP2 was released 4 years ago...
