PostgreSQL runs on Windows or Linux, so why would a Windows Only request be
an issue or reasonable? I can tell you I started out with, and am still
using, the PostgreSQL Windows version and it runs great. On a different
machine I am also using the Linux version, and again, it runs great. Both
took a while to learn to set up and get running. I had to do some reading
on the matter, and get my feet very wet. But once I learned how to use
PostgreSQL I was hooked. It works great with VFP, and has proven both solid
and scalable (I use parameterized views to keep my cursor sizes under the
VFP 2Gb file size limit).

For the record, I am not necessarily a M$ basher, but when I see better
solutions (especially Open Source/Free) offered that are less
costly/restrictive than M$'s offerings, I am no longer so apprehensive about
moving in that direction. I have grown weary of M$'s technology hopping
from the "This time this is the best solution you can use for your
customers" to the "Now this is really and truly the best solution for you to
use, and anyone using the old stuff is foolish, and we will advertise
heavily to make certain you and your prospective customers know it". I have
gone through 4 iterations of that crap, and I am not going to drink their
kool-aid any more. I do not have to. I feel M$ has time and again spiked
their previous technologies maliciously, and pushed their latest bloatware
far more for their own benefit than mine or my customers. If they really
cared about the solutions that work best for my customers when using M$
solutions they would not have abandoned VFP.

I am so weary of the entire Vista debacle, and now have to pay a premium to
be able to downgrade Vista Ultimate to XP Pro to avoid using Vista OS - yet
M$ will count any machines I downgrade to XP as another Vista sale, further
"proving" how broadly Vista is being adopted. Let's not even get into the
continual hammering by viruses & malware I have to perpetually spend all
kinds of money for to help protect M$'s Operating Systems from being
invaded, and time burned cleaning up when the defenses are still overcome.
I am still miffed about their Terminal Services CAL pricing change with
Server 2003+, which bit me last year (used to be free, now essentially
doubles the User CAL license fee). I think that was my turning point when I
decided to move my focus more to using Open Source (Linux) for my Servers,
and to make certain I selected solutions that worked on both Windows and
Linux PostgreSQL).

It is not so much that I despise M$ for what they have done and allowed to
happen that irritates me, it is more that they really do not seem to give a
rat's ass - and are very quick to come out with all kinds of craziness
"proving" a free Linux OS is magically more expensive to set up and run than
Windows Server (not true, I use both, Linux is a snap to maintain - and
requires no AntiVirus protection, only needs to be rebooted when I make an
internal hardware change, runs without needing any tweaking after it is set
up). Frankly, I have come to not trust M$ as it is painfully clear they are
looking out for their own best interests, not for the best interests of mine
or my customers. It is up to me to seek out the best tools to use, and M$
is no longer the top provider of such solutions.
