Feeling bold?

Use a Linux-based solution. I can envision setting up a box with Samba,
ssh, nfs, and/or other access methods, with any number of drives attached.

Here's a Linux distro that is tuned for NAS, and comes with a browser
configuration tool:

http://freenas.org

I'm going to be building a custom NAS for my house sometime soon, which
will spin down the harddrives and go to sleep after 30 minutes of
inactivity, and wake up when a client wants access using Wake-on-LAN.
I'll bury it in my basement and all devices in the house will just be
thin clients that boot their Linux images from the NAS, and access/save
all data to the NAS.
