A fair point, to be sure, and I can relate as the father of a teenage
daughter who ran up amazing text bills and out of network charges. The
difference I think is that when these charges happened to us I knew it was
100% my fault for underestimating her usage ( who would think 90+ texts a
day was even possible? Now I know better ). I changed the plans to
accommodate the reality of her use and now it works great. My problem lies
in the knee-jerk shifting of responsibility to the provider instead of
accepting it. I don't blame them at all for trying to get out from under
such a devastating bill, and I do buy the idea that their contract wasn't
properly explained to them by the salespeople at ATT. I would just respect
them more if I saw an acknowledgment of shared responsibility for the
occurrence.

Because it is not always intentional. My son sends hundreds of text
messages, and we bought an "unlimited" plan so as not to have to worry about
running up huge bills. One of the girls he met recently actually lives
outside Toronto, and thus has a Canadian phone address. She was here in the
US, and he was texting her over the course of several days. This resulted in
a fairly large charge for "international"
texting.

He did not intend to text internationally. Canadian numbers are
identical in format to US numbers. There is nothing that tells him that he
is incurring additional charges.

So please don't assume that anyone who incurs unexpected charges are
idiots or moochers.
