There's social networking, and then there's social networking....

There's the whole online thing which it seems you are mostly referring
to. There are some things to be gained here and elsewhere. Just some
quick examples for myself would be getting Ed to be my roommate at
Devcon, making arrangements to meet up w/ people at conferences (The
Darryl's in this case), etc. I had a beer w/ Ted once and despite how
great his professional rep is, I know the guy face to face and would
gladly send work/contacts his way... I connected w/ Paul on his way thru
town one time... I sent Stephen some hops once... Heck, you and I have
had ongoing discussions about steel fabrication stuff for what - 6 years
now? A guy on the Oregon Coast has offered a place for me to crash and
give me a ride back to Eugene after a long distance bike ride... It's
not just your friends you can tap into for favours, you can often times
get away with it w/ professional associates since you've networked with
them extensively. I'll bet I could pick any major metro area in the USA
and probably get a decent hook up for a place to crash, a guide, or at
least some recommendations about the area. Oh and from time to time I
get technical questions answered as well... <g>

I read very few of the posts on ProFox and none from [OT] - I pick and
choose how I'm going to spend my time with that stuff. BUT I made it a
point to stick with the list over the last 3 years because I had
developed so many contacts and think of a lot of you as my "friends". I
lean on you, you lean on me... I've been with this list since day one
and there is a lot of value in that. Some people here might not like me,
but it's probably a safe bet that everybody at least knows my name when
they see it.

And then there's social networking...

GET AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER, and get out there and do the mix and mingle
with your professional associates... join that user group, chamber of
commerce (or just hang out with them)... the IT Professionals Forum I
helped put together is a great example - heck I'll bet that the monthly
meeting is about the only time some of these guys get out of the house
and prolly think it's the social event of the month - but to their
credit they make it to the meetings... I make it a point to help people
improve their list of contacts (I ask everyone to do the '15 second
elevator pitch') and I try and connect people to jobs... Over the years
I've helped out at least 30-40 people get a job or some contract work...
that could easily come back in my favour.. think about it - how much
time each week do you spend doing a whole lot of nothing? Don't you
think you could free up an hour or two? It's all about priorities....

I'm not trying to rant here, I'm just trying to tell you how important I
think this whole concept of 'social networking' is... it's easier than
you think and at least w/ the online stuff you are in front of the
computer anyways...
