Agreed that most stuff on twitter is not substantial; it's a lot like
the OT stuff on ProFox, only shorter and without the obnoxious people.
Remember, you only see the tweets of those you choose to follow; I
think of 'twitter' as short for 'twit filter' sometimes!

I also like the information that I pick up from it. I follow lots of
people who are smart, and they occasionally re-tweet something from
someone I don't know who I find interesting. I'll then start following
them, and thus expand the network I have for new and interesting ideas.

I'm really starting to dislike the name 'social networking', as it
connotes a bunch of teenagers texting 'OMG!' back and forth. While I
was typing this, I got 3 new tweets from Tim O'Reilly, of O'Reilly
publishing:

Now none of those are earth-shattering, but I'm certainly going to
check out the RedHat CEO link that I probably wouldn't have known
about otherwise. Will it be useful? Maybe, maybe not. But odds are
better than average that it will.

I have always enjoyed learning about new stuff. Twitter, IMO, is an
excellent way to get exposed to new stuff that is likely to be
interesting and relevant. Oh, and sometimes fun, too.
