Every auto manufacturer servicing the US no processes facotry communications
over the Internet using IE. They require the dealers to use Windows based
PCs as part of their franchise agreement, some manufacturers even provide
specific PCs with their own blend of settings. GM's Dealerline "almost"
works with FF, for instance, but not well enough to be able to use it well.
IE is king, therefore M$ is emperor.

That said, there are some places a dealer could use Linux or Mac, but the
PITA factor would be sufficiently high to cause anyone in the IT realm to
not pursue it deeply or long enough to end up with a good case showing it is
worth the savings in license fees for workstations. File sErvers that are
used internally may be another story.

At this point I defer to Dave Smith, as he is not only as deeply immersed as
I am in the retail auto dealer world, he has made several attempts to deploy
Linux based machines in his organization. He would be more "boots on the
ground" qualified to speak to the specific obstacles he has run into.
