Pete,

Windsor is south of some parts of the U.S. but I haven't heard of anybody
freezing to death in Windsor. Maybe in northern Saskatchewan or Alberta, but
not in Windsor. And winter only lasts five months. Windsor gets maybe 6 weeks
of really cold weather. You just adjust for the climate.

–adjective
1. of or pertaining to a centralized government that does not tolerate
parties of differing opinion and that exercises dictatorial control over many
aspects of life.
2.      exercising control over the freedom, will, or thought of others;
authoritarian; autocratic.
–noun
3. an adherent of totalitarianism.
Origin:
1925–30; totalit(y) + -arian

Canada does have 5 parties with differing opinions. They are Conservative Party
of Canada (forms current minority government), Liberal Party of Canada (the
official opposition), New Democratic Party of Canada, Bloc Quebecois (regional
party focused on Quebec) and the Green Party of Canada.

Canada does allow residents to keep and bear arms. There is a gun registry for
all guns - hand guns and rifles. Many are opposed to the registry and have not
registered their weapons. Owning automatic guns by individuals is prohibited by
the criminal code. I don't know if this is the reason. But Canada's largest
cities have the lowest murder rates per capita when compared to large cities
throughout the world. Toronto, a city of 2.6 million has on average 85 murders
per year.

Canada has an immigration policy of allowing between 125,000 to 140,000
immigrants into Canada. All highly skilled individuals should be able to
qualify for jobs in Canada. More information is available at
http://www.canadaimmigrationvisa.com/visatype.html

As to your suggestion that the Canadian customs people rifled through your
stuff, the same thing happened to me a Canadian returning home to Canada. They
ripped the seat out of my car and then I had to put it back. They would let me
watch what they did or get proper ID from them. They have extraordinary powers
of arrest and detention just like the U.S. immigration and customs at border
points.

Sorry to hear about this unfortunate incident. Most times crossing the U.S.
Canadian border I have no trouble. It's important to look these people straight
in the eye and only answer questions they ask as briefly and completely as
possible.

Al
