Putting your own computer that you have root access to inside a datacenter is completely different than having your ISP host your database on their equipment. How many other accounts have access to that equipment? How many other accounts have databases on the same server instance? I charge for the time it takes me, not for hosting. So in the months where I don't have to lift a finger, they don't get charged. But the initial setup and some ongoing maintenance, done with care and integrity, will indeed cost them a lot more than the 'cheap hosting' setups. But I think customers appreciate full service. At least mine do!
