A while back I was getting driven insane by random beeps coming from the PC speaker every so often. Went nuts doing virus scans, updating keyboard drivers and so on .... after ages I tracked it down to whatever component the particular version of Google Desktop Search I had was using to index inside PDF files. For some reason, this would beep the hardware speaker in the PC (!).
