I think that the background indexing services on Windows, including Google Desktop, suck because they are continually searching for updated, deleted, and new files. Whereas on Linux and Mac, the indexing services have much lower ongoing overhead because instead of continually searching, they respond to OS events when a file is updated, deleted, or created. I can say that the spotlight indexing on my MacBook doesn't slow me down - I'm never aware of it, but spotlight works great, instantly finding files that contain arbitrary text.
