I think that the background indexing services on Windows, including Google 
Desktop, 
suck because they are continually searching for updated, deleted, and new 
files. 
Whereas on Linux and Mac, the indexing services have much lower ongoing 
overhead 
because instead of continually searching, they respond to OS events when a file 
is 
updated, deleted, or created.

I can say that the spotlight indexing on my MacBook doesn't slow me down - I'm 
never 
aware of it, but spotlight works great, instantly finding files that contain 
arbitrary text.
