Part of the problem is that American cars are known the world over as having terrible build quality compared to pretty much everyone else (we'll exclude the Chinese tho!) And they aren't cheaper either. So people are asked to choose between a locally produced poor quality vehicle and a similarly priced imported superior vehicle.
Here in Australia we went thru the same thing 20 years ago. The govt forced manufacturers to make a better product at a reasonable price by reducing tariff protection. Two of the 5 manufacturers shut up shop and left. The other 3 (Ford GM/Holden and Toyota) now make world-class cars of excellent quality and price. America needs to do the same. But you need to recognize one of them will probably go under. And it will be GM who are already dead but wont lie down. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of MB Software Solutions General Account Sent: Wednesday, 18 February 2009 3:33 AM To: ProFox Email List Subject: Re: [OT] As usual, Calvin was ahead of his time On Wed, February 11, 2009 7:28 pm, Ed Leafe wrote: > http://bit.ly/23R3Xv LOL! Makes me think: "if the American car makers made the kind of quality vehicles that Toyota and Honda and the others do, they wouldn't be in such a pickle." Yeah, but to be fair, the unions are what most consider the reason for the Big3 US automakers being in the situation they are financially. Toyota, for example, can make a car cheaper (and yet of higher quality--go figure) than the Big3 apparently.
