My commercial app which my client distributes to their customers has licenses
that
are checked every time the app starts (but the app can start for 20 days with
no
successful connection before it quits altogether). My client has gotten their
clients
to pay up by simply turning out the lights temporarily on their license.

Additionally, each license has options and modules to enable/disable. So, at
the
click of a button, my client can enable customer b to be able to enter new
vendors,
for instance.

And usage is also logged. Comes in handy to know who is using the software, and
how
often (giving the report to my client regularly justifies my existence!)
