I am actually using Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Server 64 bit on two Dell Precision
t3400 PCs with 8Gb RAM. I am using the 64 bit version just to be able to
map the 8Gb RAM natively, and to be able to run VMWare Server under a native
64 bit CPU and 64 bit OS, as required by VMWare if one wants to be able to
harness > 3.5 or 4.0 Gb RAM.

I found it just as easy to set up as the 32 bit Server (or desktop) OS. I
did install the GUI shell on the 64 bit Server OS, and it works fine. And,
all 8Gb is being seen, as expected, natively.

I am using these 2 machines to run multiple concurrent VMWare guest machines
using Windows 2000 Pro OS with between 768Mg and 1Gb RAM assigned to each
virtual machine. I am moving to the VMWare ESXi Bare Metal host OS, rather
than VMWare Server 2 under Linux, as I want to get > 3 machines to run with
more balanced performance. But, unless I really start to get wild with
Linux 54bit for the Host Machine, performance for 3 concurrent 1Gb guest
machines has been decent. To get to 5 - 7 such machines I have learned I
need to go to ESXi. Shame. These t3400 units with 8Gb RAM and Ubuntu
Server 8.04 64 bit really scream! I opted to use v-8.04 as it is LTS (Long
Term Support), and VMWare recommends sticking with LTS, although I have seen
other folks using newer non-LTS Ubuntu 64 bit apparently just fine with
VMWare.

I am not paying for any Ubuntu support. I have found everything I need in
The Wild, plus any earlier stuff in ProLinux. In fact, our friends in
ProLinux flat out rock!
