Michael, For cheap, reliable, basic web hosting, LunarPages can't be beat. We pay $100/year and can host multiple sites. Pro: Up-to-date versions of PHP and MySQL, great up-time, and excellent community support. Con: (Very) poor Python support; out-of-date Python environment. www.lunarpages.com
Webfaction offers a step-up in capabilities and scalability, up-to-date Python, and support for long running processes (Django). Monthly pricing begins at $10/month. We're currently moving our LunarPages sites/code to this host. Highly recommended. www.webfaction.com We're also looking at Rackspace Cloud Services ($100/month) and Cloud Servers. Rackspace Cloud Services is a great deal if you have a lot of websites and/or want to run both Linux and Windows based web apps under the same account. The downsides are the minimum price (starts at $100/momth) and their version of Python is years out-of-date (come on Ed, kick some-ass over there!<g>). Rackspace Cloud Servers is a very exciting and (IMO) a more polished alternative to Amazon's EC2 cloud offering. Rackspace Cloud Servers is incredibly cheap when used an on-demand basis, but its not cost effective for full-time use. I expect to be using Rackspace Cloud Servers alot (for backoffice ETL vs. web sites) over the coming year.
