Oh, wait, I missed that you were talking about Ubuntu. What system files were 
you 
able to destroy when logged in as a normal user?

I've done lots of damage as root, too. Being logged in as root is an extreme 
reserved 
for those who know what they are doing or who assume the risks of tinkering 
around.
