I taught introductory Excel once (1995) and I asked them to grab the mouse and do something or other and one user asked me what the mouse was... It was a long day!

Most (Windows) users are deeply dense about how to use their computers (Mac folks know more). I can't say in a class: "Let's go to the <such-and-such> directory in Windows Explorer, and double click on <some file>." In a class of 10, 2 people would be doing it and 8 would be staring at me like I was from another planet. Some people still are looking for a phone book when you use the word "directory" -- no smiley there -- seriously this happened recently. I'm no M$ fan, but this is something with which I agree. We who know what we are doing can customize it the way we want.
