How safe do you want to be? 640x480 is guaranteed, but most
probably are using a higher resolution.

When I started with my app, it was 640x480. This got increased
after several years to 800x600. About a year ago, we made the jump
to 1024x768.
Some of the management functions have gotten rather involved,
and the increased screen space is useful. If you do not really need
it, then do not bother. I did a fair amount of squeezing before
proposing the change.
