I just got back from the barber shop. Your statement lacks context, and seem to generalize that the absence of handguns insures a peaceful, quite, nonviolent society, and the presence of handguns guarantees violence and death. An estimated 6 million people, who were basically peaceful, unarmed, nonviolent and deeply religious, were murdered under Nazi Germany, so I'm having a hard time making sense of your generalization. Think how much worse the recent event at Fort Hood might have been, if the civilian police office assigned to the Air Force had not intervened by force with her handgun. A handgun can be used for good or evil depending on who controls it, and the absence of handguns or other weapons of war does not eliminate evil and its fruits. Given the involvement of US Forces in the ME, who have been exposed to brutal violence on a daily basis, I expect more events such as the episode at Ft Hood to occur, as the US reduces troops and post traumatic stressed servicemen try to integrate back into a peacetime society. "The chicken will come home to roost" in the form of violence at home, as the Reverend Jeremiah Wright might put it.
