Joel,
Sounds like a problem I had a while ago. The slowness in "identifying" the
hardware was down to a Trojan I had picked up "Virtumonde"
"http://www.virtumonde.net/"; allied to something called "SmitFraud".

The AVG and Microsoft software didn't pick them up. Removing both of these
resulted in a scan time for updates of 2 minutes as opposed to 2 hours.

Subject: [NF] Replacement for Windows Update?

Heya,

When I launch Windows Update in Internet Explorer, my machine slows to a
crawl. It also takes forever to 'scan' my computer - well over an hour.

Can anyone recommend a good replacement for Windows Update, to keep my
drivers/software up-to-date? I'm running under XP Home SP3.

Thanks in advance,

Joel
