It's a missed opportunity and a wasted resource. In a world so badly in need of "course corrections" technology people can make a difference. Would we prefer the fruits of our work be just lines of code? Aren't we interested in the concepts that can make a difference? Don't we see that technology and society are intervowen? Look what's happening in China today. The stage is set and the Chinese people are going to fight for what they want: an uncensored Internet. Should we wait for them to lead the way beyond that? > I don't like a lot of programs on TV, either. Couple of reasons: - I think ProFox is great. It's an institution you've created that has endured longer then many others, so you've got the right formula. I'm just looking at one problem, and imagining. - I have no sense of political correctness - I'm already using sleep time for great reasons > > Ed, don't you work for a company whose business is the > cloud? It's a metaphor, of course. In a way, I love words, but they are too often badly chosen, spun or abused (as in "patriot act"). This one, I think, manages to hit a high note and hasn't been tainted - yet. To me, it symbolizes the abstract world of computers and the Internet in a single, simple word that average people can relate to, as the place where "the Internet lives". Exactly what comprises the Internet, well, we're still doing that, and in this context I'm suggesting there may be gold in those hills in the form of avatars attending virtual meetings. I come up with ideas all the time. Some work and some flop. My thinking here is to encourage curiosity and discussion on the possibilities, mindful that someone else may well see something I'm missing. > > Don't they see a great opportunity to make the net more useful, > > even just for themselves at first? Aren't you working with people whose imaginations are at least tickled by the possibilities? Aren't you guys already offering something like second life and virtual meeting facilities as a service within your 'cloud' offerings?
