Nobody is talking about the language portion. You as a professional are expected to know and be proficient with your tools.
But there is no way in hell that you can be the expert about their business process, which means you better be getting damned good guidance from the business side or your project will be just another wasted money project that went bad, no matter how good you are with your tools, and especially so when depts are across state lines or around the world -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Ed Leafe Sent: Saturday, February 13, 2010 1:39 PM To: ProFox Email List Subject: Re: .NET and other languages for a VFP developer On Feb 13, 2010, at 2:20 PM, Virgil Bierschwale wrote: > An unmanaged professional without guidance is about as good as an > unmanaged missle that somebody has pulled the trigger on. > > Just because a person is a professional does not mean that they do not > require guidance in the form of blueprints. That's just plain wrong. You hire a professional because you don't have the knowledge to do the job yourself. Do you give a set of "blueprints" to your doctor? Do you tell your lawyer how to argue a case? Of course not. You tell them what your needs are, and then expect them to have the necessary knowledge and skill to either heal you, or keep you out of jail. The same is true of software development. If I had a potential client tell me how the app they want should be written, i.e., they handed me "blueprints", I would pass on the job. Clearly they think they know more about my craft than I do, and there's no way that such an arrangement can turn out well. -- Ed Leafe [excessive quoting removed by server] _______________________________________________ Post Messages to: [email protected] Subscription Maintenance: http://leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profox OT-free version of this list: http://leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profoxtech Searchable Archive: http://leafe.com/archives/search/profox This message: http://leafe.com/archives/byMID/profox/4e35190f180d46e7a4df910de8fdf...@bierschwc0bba6 ** All postings, unless explicitly stated otherwise, are the opinions of the author, and do not constitute legal or medical advice.
