And yet one more thing..... <g> A lot of distros come in what is called a LIVE version. You download it, burn the ISO to a CD, stick it in the CD drive of the machine you want to play w/ Linux on, reboot to the CD. Presto - you be running Linux. Some distros can be (more or less) easily put on a pen drive even.... When running off the CD things happen slower, but all the functionality is there.... doesn't touch your hard drive in case you are worried about that....
