On a Windows machine? Yes, that's about your best bet.

You may have  been dodging bullets.  But I'm in the same boat. Never a 
virus.  But I attribute my success to not trusting Microsoft, never use IE 
(if at all possible), using Linux when browsing the Internet (if possible), 
and pretty much never do what Microsoft recommends (in terms of file 
installation, configuration, etc).

I'm not sure why folks suddenly think MS's "Security" scanner is 
trustworthy. There's not much empirical evidence showing trusting MS is a 
smart move.
