Ya know, my experience had always been the complete opposite than the
horror you talked about... I too had always got by with a handshake....

Then I decided to "get official" and I bought Whil's Software Developers
Guide (recommended!!) and used some of the templates for drawing up a
contract with a client. Everything looked good to me so I sent them the
document, not realizing that the office manager, who was generally
pretty worthless to begin with, happened to be a paralegal and wanted to
show off...

We spent weeks going back and forth over the contract - I'll bet I had
at least 50 hours tied up with that thing....

And in the end I never did the work anyways... they wanted to change a
program and didn't have the source code, and I managed to decompile it
and it was a mess, told them how much it would take to clean it up and
make the changes they wanted...

They said no thanks and I was glad to get rid of them....
