Malcolm,

I used Photoshop for years - and I recently tried Gimp - but, I had
issues with it. Probably because the interface was so different than
Photoshop. But, I've also been using a slightly different version of
Photoshop - which is MUCH cheaper - call Essentials. If you like PS -
but, want something cheaper - yet still has the functionality of PS
(although I believe they tend to base it upon older versions of PS) -
then you might consider Essentials...

These are recommended by MakeUseOf website:

Paint.NET - Strong candidate as a potential substitute for Photoshop for
beginner/intermediate users.

FastStone Image Viewer - One of the best image viewer, converter &
editor bundles.

IrfanView - The Swiss Army knife of image viewers/editors. Extremely
popular.

Google Picasa - Powerful photo manager software from Google. Includes
1-click photo retouching features. Easy online photo sharing.

GIMP - Very capable graphic editor with Photoshop-like features. Often
labeled as free Photoshop alternative.

PhotoScape - Another good free photo editing application.

Thanks,
