Why overcomplicate matters with VMware and VirtualBox? If your version of Windows 7 supports it then use XP Mode. You will have to download it (for free from MS) but it will run 16-bit apps seamlessly on your Windows 7 desktop and Start menu, and XP Mode supports serial ports.
